I once spent FAR too long trying to solve a similar problem only to discover that somehow I had pressed the Caps Lock key (immediately above the shift key) and was typing letters I did not intend to.
(wish there was an option for, "there's nobody looking over my shoulder. show me the damn LETTERS instead of dots!)
