RS700 as an access point (AP)
RS700 will not work with another RS700 as an access point. It simply shares the same IP range on the LAN and two separate wi-fi networks with different SSIDs and Passwords. Netgear Tech support realized tonight that even if both SSIDs share the same name and password, there is no handoff between the RS700 and the RS700 AP. Not really happy because (1) the range is much less than advertised which is why I needed an access point, and (2) the access point feature really isn't an access point. It is simply another router and wi-fi network that shares the same IP range on the LAN. An Access Point is for Wi-Fi not LANs so it is a misnomer. A device that extends a LAN is called a SWITCH. Netgear engineering needs some training. Not being negative or meaning an insult but it took 3 hours with tech support and 3 calls for them to figure out it would not really work as an AP. Now I get to wait 2 - 3 weeks to get a refund since I bought directly from Netgear. In general I am happy with their products. Moral - don't use a RS700 if you need it to go more than about 30 feet thru walls on wifi7 (6) or need to use it as an access point for another RS700.
When the RS700's were released, there was discussion of adding the mesh feature at a future date but nothing has been even hinted at that update yet. So its exactly as you describe, basically 2 routers.
If you were wanting a mesh, buying a mesh such as orbi would have been the route to go

I have two RS700s set up with the second as an Access Point using a 10gig connection as a backbone. In order to make sure that they are not two separate networks, you have to make sure that the second one is set to AP mode. To do that, on the second RS700, go to Advanced > Advanced Setup > Router / AP Mode, and select AP Mode. Once I have done that, any device that connects to the second RS700 (wifi or ethernet) is connected to the main network with no hassle.
If you do not have an ethernet cable connecting the two of them (RS700 #1's LAN to RS700 #2's WAN), then you will be out of luck.
