RS700S, IPTV Config, Nokia ONT and VEN501

Hi

I am first trying to find out my ISP's IPTV protocol [Metronet] to use with my G5308T managed switch with the [vlan, etc options OR via the Netgear RS700S WiFi router] with those options so I can deep six this Technicolor VEN501 wireless transceiver I have which is hooked directly up to a Nokia G240 Triple Play ONT. I only have 2Gbit FTTH & IPTV....no voip phone.

Nokia port 1 on the going to the VEN501. A fixed amount of bandwidth is allocated for that port just for IPTV < 45MB/s.

Nokia port 2 yields the full 2Gig fiber service and is directly connected via CAT 8 to a Netgear RS700S WiFi router [which supports IPTV] in static IP mode. I do not need to use any DDNS type service for obvious reasons and I do not have any gaming, QOS or firewall/security enabled [minus the IPV4 standard OEM settings, thus there are no redirects so to speak. I use ExpressVPN on everything so no internal VPN is active either.

Now I understand that I would need to run another CAT 8 cable [my preference is all] directly from port 'x' on the Netgear RS700S WiFi router to my STB/TV, thus allilowing me [once working] to deep six the Technicolor VEN501 wireless transceiver which currently broadcasts the IPTV signal to the STB].

The only info someone mentioned to me is 'bridge mode'. This was another Tom's Hardware user. He wasn't sure.

So, I just need some info on their IPTV protocol so I can at least try to get the right VLAN [if needed] setting as well as finding out if I needed the Multicast option enabled. I will take any advice as far as what to try first, etc. as well.

Phone Metronet? YES; I have called Metronet.
Response: "Uhhh..hmm...you want to know what about IPTV....I haven't the slightest clue to any of that info you mentioned other than what's written down in our customer help database procedures."

Oh.. Metronet is of course not in the provider list within the router 🙂

I'm old school is all. Hardline all the way for myself is all.

THIS IS MY PRIORITY AT THE MOMENT. I can upload a network topology/block diagram if needed.

MY ULTIMATE GOAL IS BELOW [FYI ONLY AT THIS POINT]

If I get this set up w/ the IPTV working I can ultimately drop the Nokia Triple Play ONT and run the FIBER to my Linux box's WAN SFP NIC with either 1 or 2 additional RJ45 NIC's for my L AN equipment and/or IPTV if my router/firewall/IDS/etc. software will play nice [Either Zentynal OR ClearOS - both are pure software based distros that do what any hardware router would do. I then could keep the Netgear and put it in true AP mode to allow for WiF only, bridge mode or remove it all togeather if I didn't want WiFi [which I very rarely use]

  • I would present all this with the ISP. If they have specific configurations and HW requirements, they will know and have all this information that needs to make there service work.
