I'm just a fellow user, but olbjan's post indicates it will never work on newer kernels. I was hoping to stick with it, but the price on 3tb disks is driving me to upgrade.
As I see it you can go to installing esxi on another device and use the same share to the run the vms or move to Virtualbox.
I think the only way to get rid of the old VMware server install is do a factory reset though.
