Surveillance playback (.php) page suddenly unavailable. How to retrieve video recordings manually?
Hi, hope someone has help available. I have been using Readynas Surveillance for years without any issues. However suddenly without any reason (no changes made to software or NAS drive itself) th...

FWIW, I suggest downloading the log zip file (which has a lot more information that is on the screen). Then send a private message to JohnCM_S that has a downloadable link to the zip (google drive, dropbox, etc). You send a PM by clicking the envelope icon in the upper right of the forum page.
Unfortunately clearing the logs also clears the zip, so there might not be enough in there. Perhaps try rebooting the NAS before you do the download. That will ensure that it captures any errors when the NAS starts the surveillance service.

However the files are in a .DAT format which dont play for me on VLC. I tried renaming it to .MP4 however that did not change anything.
DAT is normally used for an old Video CD (VCD) format. Can you try renaming it to .MPG (instead of MP4), and see if VLC will play it then?
Also, can you download MediaInfoXP ( https://muldersoft.com/#mixp ) and use it to analyze the details of the DAT file? Then cut/paste the results in a reply here. This particular program doesn't include any adware or other obnoxious stuff. After you install it, just click on Analyze File and select one of the DATs.

It looks like it is an elementary H.264/AVC bitstream (not a VCD). So changing the extension to .MPG won't work. Try .h264 - that likely will.

HiStephenB
Renaming to .h264 does not work, I guess as it is a codex not an extension. However I just decided to drop the .dat file into Handbrake (https://handbrake.fr/ - Great solftware btw for converting videos) and it regonized the video content and showed a preview. I was not able to play it inside the software preview, however, I was able to convert it to another format (e.g. H265 10-bit mp4) which played in VLC. Now I have to go through all the needed .dat files convert them and stitch them together. I guess some extra work, however at least if JohnCM_S cant help find the issue/solution I have a back up option available.
I will post the log soon.

It's both actually, and VLC is supposed to recognize the extension. Though it sounds like you have a workaround (and converting it will make it easier for others to play it). FWIW, H.264 support is ubiquitous, H.265 isn't - so you might consider adjusting your transcoding to output H.264 instead of H.265.
If you need the video for evidence, of course make sure you preserve the original DAT.
