Some add-ons can be safely updated from within the app. Others require app updates. The best person to answer for what the situation is for these apps is WhoCares? (the forum handle the community developer of these apps goes by on these forums)

I think poussin has owncloud on his dropbox and I'm pretty sure it is available in the apps directly on the NAS. So not sure if this is worth buying it (that way you won't have to pay the new versions). However you can donate (memberlist.php?mode=viewprofile&u=10326).

Where possible and supported by the app I try hard to make any integrated update mechanism available in the add-on. This works well for a number of add-ons/apps like for example SIckBeard, Couchpotato, Jenkins. I haven't yet tried ownCloud because I'm currently on vacation in Greece. Also please note that there's always a chance that an update misfires, either because the update mechanism has changed (as happened with CouchPotato for example) or because the update itself contained bugs (happened with SickBeard once iirc). In such cases either re-install the original add-on or bug me for an updated version.

@WhoCares, that sounds very good. I don't mind paying for the apps on rnxtras, it's not much considering the amount of work I suspect you do when creating the packages. Do you have apps on other places besides rnxtras? and if so, do you have a donation button somewhere like poussin? :)

And have a nice vacation, probably a bit more vacation friendly right now than Sweden ;)

I agree, I just wanted to let you know your other possibilities, but the prices are indeed pretty low. Both developpers do good job so... Just look at the addons on the available apps, there are not many names on there... So I'm glad they both take time to do some apps.

This works for women (or men depending on taste and gender) and for your boss too, but you have to choose the words very carefully or the invocation will fail ;) You don't want to invoke an angry boss lvl 120 that would surely (back)fire (at )you xD

There is a need for improvement on anything that is not perfect... And nothing is perfect ;) Cloud apps is not the only thing I would improve on NAS units, far from there.

I agree, I can still not get the Genie Marketplace to show any apps that matches my active devices (RN312&RN314). As long as the readynas community exists it is not that critical, but without it...

I just want to download the Owncloud add-on for my Readynas Duo v1 (Sparc) from https://rnxtras.com/addons/owncloud-7-readynas-4-sparc.
The rnxtras.com site does not offer me to register me to download this add-on.
How can I retrieve the add-on ?
