HiStephenB
Renaming to .h264 does not work, I guess as it is a codex not an extension. However I just decided to drop the .dat file into Handbrake (https://handbrake.fr/ - Great solftware btw for converting videos) and it regonized the video content and showed a preview. I was not able to play it inside the software preview, however, I was able to convert it to another format (e.g. H265 10-bit mp4) which played in VLC. Now I have to go through all the needed .dat files convert them and stitch them together. I guess some extra work, however at least if JohnCM_S cant help find the issue/solution I have a back up option available.
I will post the log soon.

It's both actually, and VLC is supposed to recognize the extension. Though it sounds like you have a workaround (and converting it will make it easier for others to play it). FWIW, H.264 support is ubiquitous, H.265 isn't - so you might consider adjusting your transcoding to output H.264 instead of H.265.
If you need the video for evidence, of course make sure you preserve the original DAT.
