To see the folder you want, you need to use SMB with finder (or file explore with Windows), not the browser interface. And \\nasname\data is only shown there if you use NAS admin credentials.
The folder name is .apps, not apps. Also, the folder is hidden. With Windows you can turn see if it you enable viewing of hidden files. Even is you can't see it, you can navigate into it by typing the path into the address bar. I don't use a Mac, so I don't know what (if any) options you need to set up in finder.
Since you are conversant with linux, you could also ssh into the NAS and access the folder using the linux command line.

Thanks, Brian.
I have found the following in the instructions:
The “system” options of DokuWiki will be found in the conf/dokuwiki.php file. However this file contains the “default” values of the system. To customize it, you should edit the file conf/local.php or create it if it doesn't exist.
However, search as I might, I am unable to find such a file. I am using the web interface using either Opera or Firefox on Ubuntu Linux or Mac OS (both current versions).

Thank you very much; this does it. As I'm not quite comfortable with ssh, I used the Windows explorer.
