FYI, you didn't post this in the right forum.  ReadyNAS is Netgear's NAS product line - which doesn't include their routers that support USB drives (sometimes called a "NAS" feature).

Netgear routers do drop some features when running in AP mode.  It is possible that attached USB drives might be one of them - not sure, since it's not a mode I use.  One workaround is to double-route - which works ok, though port forwarding, etc becomes a bit more complicated.  Anyway, you might want to follow up in the router forum area.

You won't get gigabit file transfer speeds (~100 MB/s) using the R6400 NAS feature.  Based on this review, it will be around 20-30 MB/s: https://www.pcworld.com/article/2960533/netgear-r6400-review-netgear-s-latest-mid-range-router-is-a-solid-value.html 

The R6400 is an older mid-range model, you would get faster WiFi speeds with something higher end.  That would be more expensive of course.  No idea on whether you'd also get faster NAS speeds.
