APC BE600M1 to support RN312+EDA500

Hi all, I'm not looking to break the bank here.  I am just looking for something to allow enough time for my 2 devices (in title) to shut down gracefully from a power outage.  Do you think this APC will work?  I like it because it allows for 2 "wall-rats" without blocking other outlets, and it's $60 on Amazon.

Other questions:

1. The above referenced APC UPS does have a usb, but do I need to check to see if it will communicate with my RN312?  IS there a sort of feature I should be looking for?

2.  According to the Netgear doc, they say "Any UPS will gracefully shut down the NAS".  Does this mean the UPS does not have to connect via USB?  How does it know to shut down?
