I don't have a full answer for you, but I have a DIR-825 and have the same problem.
At this point I have it pretty much narrowed down to a Bonjour problem, because when I mount the ReadyNAS share with command+k it will perform a time machine back-up as requested, but if that share is not mounted in that fashion, bonjour will fail to find it.
