If it works flawlessly with a direct connection, then that is a good indicator that there is something in the network path that is not compatible. I had a similar problem with a D-Link DGS-2205 switch that was not compatible with my NVX during normal file transfers from the NVX to the PC. Transfers from the PC to the NVX were fine. I could write the files just fine, just couldn't read them!
I replace the switch with a Netgear GS-108 and all was good. If you can find a switch that you know is good, connect it to your router and then your Mac and the Ultra to the switch. That way the router is not in the path during backups. (Switches are also generally cheaper than routers.)
