Another option, and the one I use, is a VPN. I use ZeroTier loaded on the NAS and my devices, though there are other solutions including ones that run in your router. This also supports remote backup without having to set up rsync over SSH, whihc ReadyCloud does not.

Which is what I do as well (using the OpenVPN feature of my Orbi system). Then I can just use SMB as I would at home.
I supplement that with Resilio Sync running on an always-on PC at home that has the NAS volume mapped to a drive letter. I find that to be a convenient way to selectively transfer files to my mobile devices, and also to automatically back up my photos.
