ReadyNAS 102 RAID1 Read Speed

There is no performance increase on Read/Write on RAID 1 configuration. This option is for Redundancy, so only one drive is operating and the other will take over in case of failure. If you are looking for that option, RAID 0 would be the answer but you will lose options for protection.
Using an SSD might be better when on RAID 1. SSDs are way faster than traditional HDDs but have lower capacity..

Although I've never tested this, I've read that the mdadm RAID package used by the ReadyNAS will give you faster performance with RAID-1 if you are reading two or more large files at the same time (but not when you are only reading one file).
SSD would be faster for directory browsing or reading/writing small files. But if you do want to increase performance, you should also consider upgrading the NAS to a more powerful model. The next model up (RN212) would give you a lot faster read and write performance. The RN102 speed is limited by it's CPU and memory.
