ReadyNAS RN104 fresh setup to replace Seagate NAS
hello, just a fresh user of the ReadyNAS system 🙂 I just acquired (used) a ReadyNAS 104 and stuck in four 4tb WD purple drives I had salvaged and tested good. Its taking days to sync,...

any input on the two issues?
Sorry, I thought I'd posted that.
My RN102 has the same processor, and runs at 50C when idle. So your CPU temp is typical.
The NAS has a back up job capability that can copy directly from the Synology. Protocol include rsync (which is what I use), smb, and NFS.

Second question, when I go to copy all my data from my existing old Seagate NAS is there a more efficient way to do so than using an external computer as a go between via NFS or SMB?
You can set up backup jobs on the ReadyNAS to copy the data directly from the Seagate. There are several protocol options - SMB, Rsync, NFS.
Personally I use Rsync for NAS backup, but all of these are ok.

How many days?
You might want to download the log zip file and look for errors. System.log, Kernel.log, Systemd-journal.log are good places to look for them.

Its been running now 42 hrs and lists just under 50% done.
I did not think this is absurd prepping raid 5 on four 4tb 5400RPM drives...
do you?
Logs don't show any errors or warnings...

It's been a while since I've seen this posted for the RN104. But I think it should have completely finished by now. This is assuming you aren't loading data onto the NAS during the sync.
So I would look for errors in the log zip (which has a lot more information than the web ui)..

Some WD Purple drives use SMR recording, which is not suitable for a NAS and will cause a very long sync. You can look up the model number and see if yours are SMR (bad) or CMR (good).

All searches show the WD40PURX as CMR

Google quick search seems to say it takes some time -
Formatting a NAS with RAID 5 on four 4TB drives can take anywhere from 24 to 96 hours, and the exact time depends on various factors, including the NAS hardware and the formatting process.
I take it to access this zip file I would have to access the system root via SSH over putty or something like so...
and no I am not accessing the unit, its just sitting there formatting the volume.
Via GUI there are no errors reported in the logs:
