RN314 - replacing a drive

Hi

I have RN314 with 4 x 4TB Ironwolf drives. I pulled one of the 4TB drives and installed an 8TB Ironwolf.

LCD message was: Date: Degraded.

Is this message usual? Also is 11-12hrs to sync to be expected?

Many thanks

Tony

ps. NAS set up as X-Raid

  • Yes, once you pulled the drive, your volume (named data) is degraded.  That is, it is no longer redundant and the loss of another drive will render it dead.  You have not lost any data.  Once the new drive completes sync, it will return to redundant status.

Hopefully, you know that you will get no additional space at this time.  you'll need to replace a second before that occurs.  It would also have been best if you made sure you have a current backup before replacing the drive since sync is a drive intensive process and the potential for a failure, though still low if you've not had any warnings about the drives, is higher during that process.

Sandshark, thanks for the quick answer. Damn, I had forgot about the capacity. Same issue when I graually upgraded from all 2TB's to 4TB's. I'll need to put pennies aside for another 8TB.
