Hi,
turns out there is a ready-made Debian package for wxWidgets which allows compilation of TrueCrypt. Here's how you get it going:
And then do the "make NOGUI=1" in the TrueCrypt source directory. Voila! Worked like a charm for me.

apt-get install wx2.8-headers libwxbase-2.8
