X-Raid or Flex
I have two drives in my system and would like to have them show as two drives and not as one or mirror. This way if I have 4 - 4GB Drives I can have each one set up for different data. Thank you

Hi there,
for this set up you need to destroy the volume, disable xraid and recreate a new volume in flex-raid. Then you can decide how many disk you want in the volume.
My raccomandations is to have the nas using the default value to prevent data lost. Disc have moving parts and subject to waer.

raid is for redundancy. not a proper backup.

Yes that is right, infact the default value of XRAID enabled is there to prevent uncorrected volume creations and give yo a peace of mind out of the box. From the name you can gather the key ReadyNAS... which mean put it in the network and if you are not so savvy you can use it straignt out of the box. So if you are in Flex raid and use all the disk in R0 you are risking your data. I never said that having that setting was a backup.
Backup now a days should be second nature. It is unacceptable that after all this time of digital life people are still not backing up.

I agree, but unfortunately lots of people in the forum don't have backups.
Usually they claim its too expensive. Obviously it does cost some, but at ~$135 for a 5 TB USB drive (today's amazon US pricing), I don't find that argument convincing.
The alternative is to ultimately pay a data recovery service, which is much more expensive (and might not be successful).

Hello blkgato,
If you want to see 2 different volumes (one for each drive) in the admin page, you need JBOD. This requires you to factory reset with the disks and create the volumes manually.
However, you need to back up the data as factory reset formats the disks.
See this article: What is Flex-RAID and how does it work with my ReadyNAS OS 6 storage system?
