Add Crashplan client
Have been testing Crashplan (http://www.crashplan.com) on my laptop - pretty slick.
Crashplan has a Linux client, so I suppose someone (not me) could get it running on the readynas? Anyone tried it?
Or maybe a Crashplan client as an official add-on, like the bittorrent client?

You run the CrashPlan desktop from another system... see their documentation for how to do this. - avpman1Aspirant

It worked! I set up the ssh tunnel using Putty for ports 4242 and 4243, shutdown the CP server and then it connected fine. The instructions regarding changing the CP Desktop port to 4200 and forwarding it didn't work. Maybe it's because I'm using CP+ and not CP Pro. Either way I worked around it and my NAS is happily backing up data from the PC. - lagrecaAspirantWill this only work on an x86 ReadyNAS? I have a ReadyNAS NV which uses their old processor architecture and would LOVE to do this, but I have a feeling it only works on current x86 variants of the ReadyNAS. Can anyone tell me for sure if this is the case?
- avpman1AspirantI wish I knew. I have a second NAS (NV+) and would like to get it running on that machine also.

The requirement for java will prevent this being run on sparc-based NAS like Duo & NV+ - avpman1Aspirant
dkerr wrote: I have got CrashPlan to work on ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer. The Java JRE that comes bundled with CrashPlan does not work on ReadyNAS. For some reason it does not find the libsl.so.2 file. Solution is to add the java JRE from debian repositories first and not use the one that CrashPlan offers to install for you.
1) Login to your ReadyNAS through SSH as root. Uninstall CrashPlan if your prior (broken) install is still there.
2) edit /etc/apt/sources.list (you can use the vi editor) to add this line to the end...deb http://archive.debian.org/debian-backports etch-backports main non-free
3) execute "apt update"
4) execute "dpkg-reconfigure debconf" and select the "Dialog" option (1) and "Medium" prompt level (3) This is necessary so that the sun JRE license agreement can be displayed and accepted by you. When you are done you can put it back to Non Interactive mode.
5) execute "apt-get install sun-java6-jre" and follow instructions.
6) Now you can install CrashPlan... download, unpack, run "./install.sh" it should not prompt you to install the Java JRE because the Sun Java6 JRE is already there.
Your're done. Or at least I was... it worked for me (on a ReadyNAS Pro Pioneer).

dkerr - Are you using CP on the NAS as a backup destination only? Or are you also using it to backup the NAS to Crashplan Central?
Thanks in advance. - avpman1AspirantHave you had any success in getting CP to backup any of the files on the NAS?
- restonAspirantI tried the procedure this evening that dkerr outlines, and this does indeed work. I configured my Ultra4 to backup to my MacBookPro and vice versa. When my friend gets CP installed onto his computer, I will be backing up my ReadyNAS to his computer. I also just tried backing up the ReadyNAS to CrashPlan Central and can confirm that backups and restores work from there.
Some things to note:
1. From dkerr's steps, "3) execute "apt update"" - this should be 'apt-get update'
2. If you're using a Mac to remotely manage the Crashplan instance on your ReadyNAS, you'll need to edit /Users/<my user>/Library/Application Support/CrashPlan/ui.properties
Read the documention in /usr/local/crashplan/doc (or wherever you told the installer to dump the documentation at) on how to configure ssh local port forwarding. When you've finished setting up the crashplan instance on the ReadyNAS, don't forget to revert your addition to the ui.properties file so that subsequent invocations of Crashplan will be for your local machine.
Many many thanks to dkerr for his earlier instructions. - avpman1Aspirant

Ditto on the thanks to dkerr. I would have never figured this out. I am now happily backing up all my music to CrashPlan Central. - zackiv31AspirantAnother successful CrashPlan install ... Being able to utilize my Pro Pioneer's CPU Power just makes me feel a little bit better for choosing it over the Ultra6
