It worked! I set up the ssh tunnel using Putty for ports 4242 and 4243, shutdown the CP server and then it connected fine. The instructions regarding changing the CP Desktop port to 4200 and forwarding it didn't work. Maybe it's because I'm using CP+ and not CP Pro. Either way I worked around it and my NAS is happily backing up data from the PC.

Will this only work on an x86 ReadyNAS? I have a ReadyNAS NV which uses their old processor architecture and would LOVE to do this, but I have a feeling it only works on current x86 variants of the ReadyNAS. Can anyone tell me for sure if this is the case?

I wish I knew. I have a second NAS (NV+) and would like to get it running on that machine also.

The requirement for java will prevent this being run on sparc-based NAS like Duo & NV+

dkerr - Are you using CP on the NAS as a backup destination only? Or are you also using it to backup the NAS to Crashplan Central?

Have you had any success in getting CP to backup any of the files on the NAS?

I tried the procedure this evening that dkerr outlines, and this does indeed work. I configured my Ultra4 to backup to my MacBookPro and vice versa. When my friend gets CP installed onto his computer, I will be backing up my ReadyNAS to his computer. I also just tried backing up the ReadyNAS to CrashPlan Central and can confirm that backups and restores work from there.

Some things to note:

1. From dkerr's steps, "3) execute "apt update"" - this should be 'apt-get update'

2. If you're using a Mac to remotely manage the Crashplan instance on your ReadyNAS, you'll need to edit /Users/<my user>/Library/Application Support/CrashPlan/ui.properties
Read the documention in /usr/local/crashplan/doc (or wherever you told the installer to dump the documentation at) on how to configure ssh local port forwarding. When you've finished setting up the crashplan instance on the ReadyNAS, don't forget to revert your addition to the ui.properties file so that subsequent invocations of Crashplan will be for your local machine.

Ditto on the thanks to dkerr. I would have never figured this out. I am now happily backing up all my music to CrashPlan Central.

Another successful CrashPlan install ... Being able to utilize my Pro Pioneer's CPU Power just makes me feel a little bit better for choosing it over the Ultra6
