CIFS share permissions on Ultra 2 from Windows 10

Hi,

 

Having a nightmare with permissions on my Readynas Ultra 2 being accessed by 2 windows users. (with Radiator 4.2.31)

Originally set up as 2 users (small home business) with home directories, shared directories and separate passwords.  However we now just want to be able to log in and access everything, everywhere from each user account but I keep getting permission denied when trying to access different files from different pcs. I seem to be able to connect to the network shares ok and can create, delete, edit files in most places in my wifes home share  but in certain sub directories I keep getting "access denied"  I don't understand why.

 

The 2 users are both in the users group and I've changed the access rights so that all accesses including  everyone has read/write everywhere and then "Set ownership for existing files" on each share to try and clear everything up. We've also got guest access enabled with read /write. I've tried everything I can think of to remove any access restrictions but I'm still getting access denied from different pcs in odd locations.

 

I've also deleted connection Credentials in my Windows Credential manager and deleted shares then reconnected but I'm still getting access denied in certain directories.  The NAS users have different login names to the windows  users pc logins  but they both have the same password to make life easier.  I would stop using one of the NAS login names but I'm worried that some of my files may then become inacessible.  

 

It's driving me slightly mad.... can anyone help at all?

    I'm still on 4.2 xx.... I didn't want to change it ...too worried about it not being successful and me being left high and dry.

     

    I've actually resolved it since posting this.... I went to the 2nd pc and checked the windows permissions for the folder in question. It turned out the containing folder has been created with Everyone permissions as read only whereas the sub directories are Everyone Full control. 

     

    So I changed this in Windows explorer / file manager by right clicking properties on the directory and changing it in the security tab, then also adding my netgearnas\username in the permissions groups for that directory. Then cascaded the changes to sub folders.

     

    I don't know why this directory didn't get the correct rights....  mystery to me....

    Are you running 4.2.x firmware, or did you convert the NAS to run OS-6?

     

    Anonymous access has obvious security issues on large networks, and Microsoft has been making it somewhat less anonymous over the years.  If you want to use it, make sure that the PC user names are not NAS accounts. If there is a matching NAS account, the password has to match what the NAS expects - otherwise you will be denied access.  There are some built in accounts (admin obviously), and you need to avoid those usernames also.

     

    Personally, I just share a single NAS account across the PCs (creating a Windows Credential for the NAS on them).  The password is included in the credential.  The security is similar to anonymous access (e.g., not a lot of protection, particularly from malware), though it does require any new PC or mobile device on the network to have the credential.

     

    I also don't use the "home" folders, so I've disabled them.

    Are these home folders?  Those are locked down by design, so you can only access them using the appropriate NAS user account.

     

    But if you mean subfolders of a share, then resetting the ownership and permissions should have cleared that up.
