Disabling EnableRootSSH

I installed EnableRootSSH in my ReadNAS Duo v1 (4.1.9 firmware). Having finished with it, I now wish to disable ssh access, or at least ssh access to the to the root UserID. Is that possible and how?

  • I think i read somewhere that re-installing the add-on again will disable root access. If that fails, or my information is incorrect, you could always re-install the current firmware your using over the top of the existing one, that ought to disable the rootssh access AFAIK.

To disable root access you could install ToggleSSH. Re-installing the firmware or re-installing the EnableRootSSH add-on would not disable it.

Do note that since you have used SSH depending on what you did using it you may be denied support if you run into problems. If you disable SSH support will still be able to tell that you enabled it in the past. To restore full software support you would backup your data and then do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) and restore data from backup.

Also should you lose access to Frontview in the future you would not be able to fix the problem via SSH and would rely on getting help from tech support or backing up your data and doing a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything).

My personal preference would be to set a strong password for SSH and leave it enabled.

I agree. I've seen several posts here from people who've suddenly lost frontview access. Having another way in seems reasonable, so why disable it?

Since it gives full access to the NAS, it needs to have a strong password (as does the admin account).
