Regardless of whether you use the built-in client or Transmission client (or any other client, for that matter) the steps are the same - you will need to forward the listening port of the bittorrent client. My recommendation is to use the Transmission client, as it is regularly updated and offers more features and functionality than the official BT client.
Once you have configured port-forwarding correctly, the process is simple.
1. Right-click the desired .torrent file and select "Copy link location" (or "Copy shortcut" in Internet Explorer):

2. Then paste the link into the client and click "Upload":

3. Wait for the torrent to complete! :)
Easy as 1, 2, 3!
