ReadyNAS Remote iPhone - Error: Unable to login

My ReadyNAS Remote works perfectly with the PC, yet on the iPhone I get an "Error: Unable to login" error after the "Reading shares list" message.

I've got the most recent ReadyNAS Remote app for the iPhone and the latest firmware for my Sparc Duo. My shares are CIF only (no FTP) and require a username/pasword (no guest access).

I've entered the username/password in the CIFS tab in iPhone app and turned the Guest toggle off. From the Samba logs it appears that it's still trying to connect as guest!

This app would be really useful if it actually worked ...

  • I am getting a similar error on my phone. Remote is working fine on my iPad wifi, and on my macs. However, on my iphone (3G), it will only work when the phone is on wifi, not 3G. Why is that? I get the "unable to login, check your network" message when trying to login while out, but it works perfectly at home on wifi.

    ???

    Any clues, jedis?
  • I've done a little more experimentation ...

If I create some shares which have guest access then I do get a list of shares and I can browse the guest shares quite happily.

I still get the NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER error in the logs as above so I think this is related to enumerating the share list rather than connecting to one of them. Maybe this is normal behaviour.

When I tap on a share that does not have guest access I still get 'Error: unable to login'. Looking in the smbd logs I can see it attempted to connect as the correct user but the password was apparently wrong.

Since the password is quite long and contains punctuation characters I thought I would try changing it to something short/simple to see if it made any difference. It didn't, so then I tried settng the user up to have an empty password and to my suprise it works.

    So I think:-

    - You need at least one share set up with to allow guest access in order to make the share list work
    - It's sending a blank password when configured to connect with a specific username/password
  • I have to agree to the post before. Trying to use CIFS with some valid user account does not work. First the shares are loaded which can be seen by guest (despite using some dedicated user account) - which can be seen since the following error is tracked:

    [2012/08/06 11:01:32.601026, 2] auth/auth.c:314(check_ntlm_password)
check_ntlm_password: Authentication for user [Guest] -> [Guest] FAILED with error NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER

And if you try to access some folder below you get an error for a wrong password even if you use the right one:

    [2012/08/06 11:01:37.418567, 2] auth/auth.c:314(check_ntlm_password)
check_ntlm_password: Authentication for user [norbert] -> [norbert] FAILED with error NT_STATUS_WRONG_PASSWORD

Despite that the app completely missed the German localization and showed me the placeholder variables instead :-(

@support, please give me your source code and I will try to fix your bugs and also give me your English "Localizable.strings" file and I would be glad providing you with a German translation file.

Otherwise I would like to get my money back for this badly support iPhone App :-)

    Regards, Norbert
  • This solution worked for me: http://www.readynas.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=75&t=64233
  • I also tested this and I have problems getting CIFS loging to work.

First: one share have to allow guest login, it seems that first connection is done using guest account.

check_ntlm_password: Authentication for user [Guest] -> [Guest] FAILED with error NT_STATUS_NO_SUCH_USER

Second: if I configure real user/password, it is not working. I always get wrong password, even with correct one.

    [2012/12/04 17:56:16.984756, 2] auth/auth.c:314(check_ntlm_password)
check_ntlm_password: Authentication for user [remote] -> [remote] FAILED with error NT_STATUS_WRONG_PASSWORD

What I tried next, was to remove user remote password, and after that it worked fine.

    [2012/12/04 17:57:47.108448, 2] auth/auth.c:304(check_ntlm_password)
check_ntlm_password: authentication for user [remote] -> [remote] -> [remote] succeeded

    User r0b is right:
iPhone and iPad ReadyNAS Remote need to allow guest user to work.
iPhone and iPad ReadyNAS Remote sends blank password when you try to login using real CIFS user.

Is it going to be fixed I next iOS app version ???
  • For those that are still struggling to get this to work:-

The setting for "WORKGROUP" can be found under Security\Security Mode in Radiator

The login must be "WORKGROUP"\"login name" - I think these may be case sensitive...

Finally and most importantly, you must tick the "allow guest access" box of the Share (CIFS tab) that you wish to access. This last item makes no sense as you should get the level of access assigned to the user that you login with. I have however read elsewhere that this is how other users got it to work and they seem to be right. If anyone else has an alternative work around I'd be interested to hear about it.
