One thing to keep in-mind when you doing the math is that files sizes are measure in Bytes and bandwith is measured in bits/sec. So if it takes 10 min to download a 100 MByte file, the average bandwidth is (100*8)/(10*60) Mbits/sec = 1.33 Mbits/sec.
If you are remote and accessing your NAS that is at home, then when you download files you will be using your home uplink. Now even though most ISPs tell you that you have 2 Mbps uplink, that is only while you are on their network. Once you hit the internet you are subject to the foreign networks your traffic traverse. For example, if you upload a file from your home PC to say some low profile web site (not youtube who uses a CDN that peers with almost all ISPs so it is like you are uploading on your ISP's network), it is unlikely that you will be transfering at your full uplink rate.
If you do end up with a relayed connection, you should see a popup over the system try icon in the lower right corner.
