I got it running eventually. Would seem that the custom port setting as set in the config file is only read if the DB doesn't exist. If the DB does exist, it uses the port setting from that. Mine was still set to the default, so had to delete the DB and set it up again, then change the port in the DB before attempting any updates that trigger a restart.
