Backup to FTP failing

Hi, I wonder if you can help. I'm trying to configure a backup which is quite basic, I'm syncing a ~10GB share on my ReadyNAS Duo to an online storage host via FTP.

I have tested this and proved the settings are all correct with a 1GB test file, so my thoughts are that the only reason it's failing is because of the amount of data being uploaded.
I suspect once the data is online, syncronising will be fine, but getting the initial 10GB online is proving difficult.

The error message isn't particularly useful, either.

ftp://ftp.example.example.com/sharename due to unknown reason. Please see log. [Job 004]

Do I just keep restarting the incremental backup until the data is uploaded? Is the NAS FTP connection just timing out?

More info here:
Model: ReadyNAS Duo [X-RAID]
Serial: xxxxxxxxxxx
Firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.10 [1.00a043]
Memory: 256 MB [2.5-3-3-7]
IPv4 address:: xxxxxx
Volume C: Online, X-RAID, 2 disks, 1% of 925 GB used

Maybe you can try to upload the entire share with a PC ftp client (like FileZilla), and see what happens. Make sure the client is set to preserve the original file dates.

An option yes, but not quite a solution.

Can't I just make the sync auto-retry when it fails? That would work. It's not getting stuck on any file in particular, or having difficulty reading file permissions, it just seems to need a kick when it times out.

Agreed. I was proposing this as a diagnostic, as you might get a more useful error message.

It could also get you past the initial upload quicker.

EDIT: I agree that auto-resume in the backup client would be nice. Though it would need to be limited somehow - if the remote server fails (for instance) I want the backup to fail, not just hang (forever retrying).
  • Yeah, 3 retry attempts would be nice.

Thanks for the replies anyway, good to know I wasn't missing anything obvious.
  • anyone got any other ideas? this is still causing me issues.

can i update the firmware? is it even worth it? I'm running:

    RAIDiator 4.1.10 [1.00a043]

    Please help?
  • ok thanks. do I need to back up my data before updating the firmware?

The install worked fine on my duo, though it is always good to have a backup before you do that kind of thing.

If you have a php addon installed, review these threads before you attempt an update:
