Backup to Readynas from Windows over internet without ssh

    Usually the SMB protocol is not used over the open internet, and you might find that your ISP actually blocks the port (so even if you open it, it still won't work).  I don't believe the NAS can use SMB encryption - which for me would be a show stopper. 

     

    Current releases of ReadyNAS don't support incremental FTP. 

     

    Rsync over ssh is much better.  If you are in control of both locations, you could alternatively deploy VPN routers, which would effectively join the two LANs into one.  That would allow you to use SMB securely.
