I am having a similar problem. Powered external 1TB drive that has been working perfectly well for almost a year (daily backups), is visible in Frontview, is visible as a share from clients on the network, access light blinks happily during the backup (incremental), then fails "due to unknown reason".
I have attached the drive (NTFS) to a PC and did a full dskchck fixing errors, did a defrag, did a full AV scan - there is nothing wrong with the disc and I have changed nothing on permissions. I have also re-installed the NAS firmware (version 4.1.10).
Over the past few weeks backups have sometimes failed, but usually worked, and like AMAEngineer found that if I ran the backup job manually it generally worked. But now I cannot get them to work at all.
External drive is a Seagate ST310005 28AS in a powered Highpoint housing.
