Bit rot protection detected a silent error in Time Machine

I'm posting this in the Time Machine forum as it relates to my Time Machine sparsebundle but it could equally be unrelated to Time Machine itself as I have no idea what the error actually means, so apologies if this is in the wrong place.

Just after Time Machine had completed its backup, I had 15 identical error e-mails; the full anonymised error says:

Bit rot protection has detected a silent error within /data/.timemachine/XXX/MacBook Pro.sparsebundle/bands/2576 on /dev/sda3 and cannot correct the error.

I searched on the forum for 'bit rot' and found a recent thread which was unrelated to Time Machine but with a similar flurry of e-mails. The poster said that all seemed to be running fine since OS 6.2.3 but I note from the release log that duplicate bit rot events have been filtered out so it may only be a cosmetic improvement.

Incidentally, my RN102 did not recognise the 6.2.3 update automatically. When I clicked check for update, it said I was running the latest available version so I am about to update manually when I have completed a running task.

Can you send me your logs (see the Sending Logs link in my sig)? Please download the logs before doing the firmware update.
  • I sent the logs two days ago exactly as per the instruction in your link but have heard nothing back.
