Can I use my readyNAS while it's rebuilding?

So, I've finally got my ReadyNAS up and running and I can even access the folders from my primary Windows machine.

I've installed the NAS drive for 2 reasons:

1. To have as a second RAID system to contain all my documents and media files so that in the event of one RAID system death, I have a backup.

2. To allow access to the media files from other computers on the network and possibly in the future, remote devices too.

The device is saying that it's rebuilding, now i'm going to assume that it's just formatting the disks and setting up the RAIDX file system and carrying out any encription.

But what I want to know is, if I can start to upload files to it and use it before it's finished rebuilding or if I shouldn't because it might interfeer with the rebuild process.

RAIDar is estimating another 5 hours to finish rebuilding and I have about 600GB to upload to it before I can upgrade the original RAID array, so If i can start transfering now it would give me a big headstart.

Thanks for any advice in advance.

  • You can upload now, but you will not get full performance (and on top of that the rebuilding will take longer).

So it doesn't speed things up much (if at all).
