Cannot access private user share - ReadyNAS NV+ #23958725
I have a ReadyNAS NV+ with the latest firmware (4.1.13) in a Windows Server 2003 environment. We have been using this for some time with no issues. Last week, a drive failed in the NAS. It was promptly replaced, but since then my boss is unable to get to her private U: drive (Mapped a drive to \\readynas\jsmith). I tried navigating there directly and while I can get to \\readynas and see all the shares, including the jsmith folder, I cannot get into it. I get the message:
When I go into Frontview and go to Security - User and Group Accounts I can see jsmith with 11,371MB used so I don't think that the folder was deleted and she lost all her files (oh god I hope not!)
I tried logging onto the server, navigating to \\readynas\home but I get the message:
I can right click on "home" but there is no security tab, no way to take ownership, and I'm kind of at a loss as to how I can get into the share and how I can let my user access it again. She is kind of freaking out since that's where all her personal and important files are stored.
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Windows cannot access \\readynas\jsmith. Check the spelling of the name, otherwise there might be a problem with the network.
Error code: 0x80070035 The network path was not found.

I tried logging onto the server, navigating to \\readynas\home but I get the message:
\\readynas\home is not accessible. You might not have permission to use this network resource. Contact the administrator of this server to find out if you have access permissions.
No network provider accepted the network path.

- TeeklinAspirantAny instructions on how I can do that or maybe a link showing me what I need to do? Right now I don't enter any credentials at all, if it's a machine on the domain I just have to enter \\readynas into the explorer bar and it will pop up with all the shares (the three I created and the private user share of whoever I am logged into at the time).
Even when I use a laptop that isn't joined to the domain but is on the network, I can still get to \\readynas without inputting credentials. - mdgm-ntgrNETGEAR Employee RetiredHave you tried rebooting the NAS?
The net use command is used via the command prompt.
Right now, I need some sleep, but I can continue helping tomorrow. - TeeklinAspirantI've rebooted it twice just to be safe, yes.
Get some sleep, I appreciate all the help and the problem will still be there tomorrow to work on. Thanks again for all your help, I owe you a drink! - TeeklinAspirantBump. Anyone have any other ideas about how to access the information in the private home shares? Hours more of Google searching and I've still come up dry on what to do when you can't access them.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserCreate a public "TempHome" share on the NAS. Then create a backup job in Frontview, specifying "all home shares" as the source, and "TempHome" as the destination. Then run the backup job.
- TeeklinAspirantReally brilliant idea, but I get the message "unable to access source /c/home" and the backup fails.

Reason for failure:
Unable to access source path /c/home. - TeeklinAspirantI gotta say I am really horrified right now that all those files on the NAS are going to be lost. I'm running out of ideas for how to actually access them, and my only comfort is that I can still see that the NAS shows the 11,300MB of space taken up. Otherwise I would think that the folder got deleted somehow.
Looking at that error message though, I get the feeling that the default location for these home shares is in \\readynas\c\home but that doesn't look like it exists when I log in as administrator and browse to \\readynas. I have \\readynas\home and \\readynas\c but I don't have a home folder inside the c folder. - Marto731AspirantTeekin,
3 points.
(1) OS reinstall http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/24874
and check access. IP and Admin/ Password go back to default.
(2) For each share, can you go to CIFS, Advanced, and click on the 'set ownership and permissions' tick box.
Do it one by one, and test.
See Appendix of

(3) If no progress thereafter, open a support ticket.

I tested it before I posted, and it worked fine with my duo v1.Teeklin wrote: Really brilliant idea, but I get the message "unable to access source /c/home" and the backup fails. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Hi Marto. This doesn't apply as the issue is only with the private user shares. There is an add-on which can reset permissions for the private shares. Though I am concerned that perhaps /c/home no longer exists (file system corruption???)Marto73 wrote: (2) For each share, can you go to CIFS, Advanced, and click on the 'set ownership and permissions' tick box.
