Cannot backup from PC to NAS
Hi,
Have spent hours on this thing... time to ask for help. I have the Readynas Duo v2. I have it working fine and can see my shares fine on Frontview and can see it on my Shares on the network. Have also assigned it a drive. I am simply trying to setup a automatic backup from a share on the network to a share on the NAS.
On the Source setting I have
Type: Remote
Name: Windows/NAS (Timestamp)
Host: traceandryan-pc (my pc name)
Path: traceandryan-pc/pictures (pictures being the name of the share - and this is exactly what the path is in the properties for the share)
Login: John
Password: Smith
I test the connection and I get the message - Unable to conect to remote folder. Invalid network name or permission denied.
I have opened the shares right up .... and no matter what I try I just cannot do it. The thing is worthless to me if I have to manually backup .... please please help.

- meatgroupAspirantSorry - I am on Windows 7 (64bit)
- vandermerweMasterTry omitting the host name from the path, that is just put in Path pictures
- meatgroupAspirantThanks ... just tried it. No luck.
- StephenBGuru - Experienced UserThe host name should certainly not be in the path.
Two things to try:
(a) ignore the test connection result, and attempt the backup anyway. Sometimes test connection and the real backup are inconsistent (one works and the other does not),.
(b) try using your PC's IP address instead of its host name.
Personally I use tools that push data from the PC to the NAS. Some of these can also be automated, so they can run on schedule. - ukbobboyLuminaryHi meatgroup (and other forum members)
Like you, I have a ReadyNAS Duo 2 but I regularly back up my PC to my Duo 2 without any difficulty although I have chosen to do so manually.
However, rather than go through all the rigmarole you are putting yourself through I simply use "Acronis True Image Home" backup software, I would suggest that you download a trial version and give it a try (you can also download various manuals to familiarise yourself).

Plus there are plenty of demonstrations, hints and tips on YouTube.
Hope this helps

That is also what I do. I set it up so Acronis creates an incremental image of the C drive in each PC (saved on the NAS).ukbobboy wrote: ...I simply use "Acronis True Image Home" backup software...
True Image can be run on schedule - with most newer PCs it will wake the PC up to do the backup. That doesn't work with some of my PCs, but I work around that using the WoL feature in the Pro's backup jobs to wake those PCs up shortly before the backup is scheduled.
True Image also lets you customize post-backup actions. I use that as well - I have a robocopy script which lets me sync some folders on the NAS with each PC.
If you want to talk more about how this approach can work, maybe start a new thread. I'm sure other backup programs have similar features, Acronis is what I used before I had a NAS, and I have chosen to stick with it. - ukbobboyLuminaryHi StephenB
I think that it is a very good idea to have a thread devoted to back-ups, from it's simplest incarnation to the most complicated.
However, I personally believe that taking the simple route on my PC and NAS Duo 2 to achieve the task I want to complete is the best way to go, in other words I don't believe in complications just for its own sake. And above all, if I identify a new (home) requirement I look for the necessary software/application to meet that need.
I have a self assembled my PC to the followings specs:-
Intel i3 540 @ 3.07GHz CPU
2 x 640GB WD HD
US Robotic V.92 Dial-Up Modem (used for faxing)
4GB Ram
Gigabyte Motherboard GA-H55M-UD2H
WinXP Pro SP3 O/S
Plus
Netgear ReadyNAS Duo 2 (primarily used for data storage)
I have other peripheral equipment, to compliment my PC, but from the above you get the gist that I am not a "games" player or use my machines for trivial purposes.
UK Bob - SpunkAspirantI have been using QuickShadow from Quicklytech. It can be set to synch the whole PC or any drive or path on the PC. It also can be set to monitor changed files and update them on the NAS. If you are connected it will do that in real time. If not, (say you are at work) it will defer the updates and process them when it sees the NAS. Also, if you have queued up a bunch of files and then use readyNAS remote, it will unload to your NAS when it connects. There is a full function free trial - I think 30 days. You can keep using it in free mode but you loose a little bit of functionality but it's still pretty useful. I think it costs $25 for full version. Check it out.
