Can't connect from Windows after new router installed

What happens if you open Explorer, and just enter \\nas-ip-address in the address bar? (using the real IP address of the NAS of course).
Be careful to use the correct slash character (// will just open your browser, so a waste of time).

Well that appears to have worked! It brings up a network credentials login dialog, and I used the NAS login details and it got me in. I didn't select the 'remember login details' checkbox, but I imagine/hope if I do this again after reboot or time out or whatever, it might allow me to not have to do this every time I want to connect.
I'll try mapping a drive letter to it now as well.
I actually did try this yesterday, saw the same login dialog, but it failed for some reason - maybe something as simple as a typo in the password as I didn't try it again since until now.
