Can't Connect to ReadyNAS Duo from any device

Please help! I've pored through the forums and can't find an answer...

I have a ReadyNAS Duo connected directly to an internal rounter (Netgear 3700). I use an iMac (10.8.4) direct ethernet connect to router and MacBook Pro (10.7.5) via Wifi.

Both machines see the AFP and CIFS shares, but can't get to the files. I am unable to connect to the other shares at all.

RAIDar does not find the shares either.

I think I need to upgrade firmware directly, but not sure how to do it or if there is another solution.

Appreciate everyone's help!

  • No, just add the new disk to the free slot when you get it, having of course tested it first when you get it.
I would not start moving the disk in and out unnecessarily, and it makes absolutely no difference which slot it is in.
  • The early readynas devices ( and the newer ones to a degree) are notorious for this sort of behaviour when a disk fails. There are all sorts of presentations of failed disks, apart it seems from the unit simply telling you that a disk has failed. The forum is full of troubleshooting which ends up revealing a hard disk failure when the initial problem was unclear.
  • So which replacement hard drive should I buy for the 1TB version? Installed is a Seagate Barracuda LP, but that is now 4+ years old...

    Really appreciate your help!
  • Also, when I replace the drive, won't I have to put the drive with my data in slot 1 so that it is not overwritten by a new blank drive?
  • Any 1 tb drive on the hardware compatibility list should be fine. The western digital red series is popular now and has good reviews.
If your data is accessible from the Nas with disk 2 in then you can just add the new disk to slot 1. The volume will then resync which will take several hours. You do not need to move disk 2 to slot 1.

You should always have a backup, particularly during volume changes, resyncs and expansion.
