To properly test the ST31000340AS, it would need to be connected to an SATA port on the motherboard of your PC (impossible on a laptop) and then run SeaTools (for Windows or for DOS). If you have a desktop, but no spare SATA cable, open the side of the case and borrow temporarily the power and SATA cable from the DVD drive (with the PC off, after the disk is connected, then boot the PC).
