If you powered down the unit, and replaced both hard drives with unformatted ones, then the duo would come up in xraid (using raid-1 in your case). You'd need to recreate any user accounts, reinstall any add-ons, restore your data, etc.
However, you do not need to change the drives. All you need to do is backup your data, delete the existing data volume via frontview, and create a new data volume using RAID-1. Then re-create your shares, and restore the files from your backup.
