Compatibility list for DUO

ReadyNAS Duov1 and ReadyNAS Duov2 are not the same. v1 is a Sparc based OS4 while v2 is an ARM based OS5.
See Hardware Compatibility List Hard Disks and select Legacy from the first drop down menu and then select ReadyNAS Duo (v1) or ReadyNAS Duo v2 from the second drop down menu. This will show the list of compatible disks.
Disk that is not listed on the HCL may or may not work with the ReadyNAS chassis, sometimes will work but not reliable that is why there is a list of compatible disks as these disks are the tested ones. Please also take note of the warning message on the page.

The v2 platforms were announced Nov 2011, so if you purchased in 2010 you certainly have a v1. V1s run 4.1.x firmware.
-The v1 doesn't support disks > 2 TB, so if you need more space than that you will need a new NAS.
-The HCL for the v1 is very dated, and you no longer have support anyway.
The simple answer is to get a NAS purposed drive (a 2 TB WDC WD20EFRX is what I'd recommend; there is also a 1 TB WD10EFRX). Seagate has a VN line which is intended specifically for NAS (ST2000VN000). I use the WD20EFRX in my own Duo v1, and it works well.
I don't recommend desktop drives for NAS, particularly the "green" drives that are on that HCL. The NAS-purposed lines are better choices. If you go with a desktop drive anyway, you should avoid Seagate DM drives (based on lots of issues reported here and elsewhere).

That should be 3TB. Reason is GPT is not supported for Sparc processors as Linux development for Sparc (v1) stopped prior to the development of GPT support. As GPT is essential for more than 2TB support, Netgear would have to develop this - it is very unlikely to happen because product engineers are migrating from Sparc to ARM based Duo and NV+ ReadyNAS devices druing that time and now migrated to OS6. Sparc based NAS is limited to 2TB drives.

Yes. V1 platforms don't support GPT. There is no workaround. .
