Dead PSU in NVx moving disks to another ReadyNas
Hi
I'm new here and I wondered if people would be kind enough to advise on my options.
Essentially I think the PSU in my RNDX4000 (which I think is a NVx?) has died.
Whilst I'm waiting on a replacement PSU to arrive so I can test this theory I'm also planning on replacing or adding a new ReadyNas to my setup and relegating this readynas RNDX4000 to being a backup device to a new ReadyNas.
So the question is if I can't get it working with a new PSU will I be able to simply move the disks into a new RN316 unit? Also generally speaking what are the models that I can move my disks to easily without data loss?
Many thanks
If you purchase an x86-based OS-6 NAS (RN300 series and up), then the new NAS can temporarily mount the data volume so you can off-load it. Then you'd need to set up the new NAS (which will reformat the disks) and restore the data from your backup. So while there is no direct migration possible, there is a way to extract the files you need (assuming a healthy RAID array). https://kb.netgear.com/29957/ReadyNAS-Migrating-disks-from-RAIDiator-4-2-to-ReadyNAS-OS-6-x86
The RN316 is no longer in production (though of course it is supported). It's been replaced by the RN400 series. If you are interested in migrating to multigig ethernet in the future, you might also want to look at the RN500 series (which has a 10GBase-T built in).

Direct migration could only be done to a legacy 4.2.x NAS (for instance a used Pro-6). Netgear stopped manufacturing these in 2013, so it would be at least 5 years old, and there are risks with purchasing used equipment - sometimes it doesn't fully work, sometimes it is missing the disk trays, etc). That said, if you could find one for a good price it might serve as a backup NAS.
Look for a 64 bit unit (ideally Pro-6 or Ultra Plus), as that gives you the option of converting it to run OS-6. Your NVX is 32 bit btw.
