Desperately need data on a unit with dead NIC
I have ready many posts that the ReadyNAS Duo v2 has NIC issues. My NIC is dead and i have tried all the troubleshooting from other posts.
I desperately need access to my Data though. My warranty is long expired.
Looking for advice on what to do. Can I just pull the drives and place into a new unit? Can i place the drives in a different ReadyNAS version? Can I hookup an external drive through the USB and somehow get a Backup/sync without ethernet access?
Please help. I have my business files and tax information on this drive and will be in serious trouble if I can't access soon.

- vandermerweMasterAre you sure you have a duo v2?

Easiest would be to backup to a usb disk, make sure you format the disk in fat or ntfs so you can read it using a PC.
You could also read one of the disks using Linux reader on a PC. If you do this only remove and reinsert the disk with the Nas off.

You can put the disks in another duo v2 or nv+v2 EDIT (if you have a v2) or a Duo v1 or NV+ v1 (if you have a Duo v1) Make sure:
1 You remove them with the unit off and insert with the other unit off.
2 You insert them in the same order
3 You have the same or later firmware on the new Nas. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserIf your warranty is expired, you must have a v1.
All v2s are still covered by warranty, they haven't been out long enough for the 3-year warranty to end.
So start by reading the guide vandermerwe linked to.
If you do try diskinternals, you need to use disk 1. Disk 2 is formatted differently - and there is no data partition. (The data is mirrored there, but the hardware raid in the duo v1 requires a different organization for that disk). - vandermerweMasterJjmanning, if you do have a Duo v1 and you wanted to put the drives in another readynas then you would need to put the drives in another duo v1 or an NV+ v1. The drives would not be able to go into a Duo v2 or NV+ v2
- jjmanningAspirantok. Thanks for all the help. Unfortunately a version 1 is no longer available and I bought a version two. I put the drives in and as StephenB stated, it gave a corrupt boot error.
Now what. I have a dead NAS v1 and a new NAS v2.
Can i put a new drive in the new NAS and place one of the drives from the NAS v1 and try to get them to sync? - vandermerweMasterWhy did you do that?
The drives will only work in a readynas that has the same platform on it (sparc). That is the v1 versions of the duo and nv+.
You cannot do what you propose.
You will need to copy the data onto a USB drive, then restore it to the new NAS.
Is it possible for you to return the duo v2? it would have been more sensible to have bought a 102 or 312, assuming of course that these are within your budget. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYour best option to get the data is to try linux reader with disk 1 of the duo v1.

My view is that you should exchange or return the v2. An RN102 is at a similar price point, and is a going-forward product. The v2 is not (and never really got all the features of the v1 and the OS6 products). - vandermerweMasterYes of course you can't initiate a usb backup.
- jjmanningAspirantok. So i honestly am still not sure what to do. So sorry, i do appreciate the help but I just don't know anything about these stupid things. I thought the concept of NAS was brilliant and a good way to backup all my important files in case my pc or mac ever crashed. I never considered not being able to access the data on the NAS because of the irreplacible NIC card failing.
<sigh> I must get access to this tax information for an audit and as quickly as possible.
So at this point, here are my issues:
1.I cannot find a v1 ReadyNAS to do a direct swap (at least not very quickly without doing major research or buying form a 3rd world whse)
So at this point, i am going to go purchase a large 2TB USB drive and try to initiate a back up from the front USB panel. I tried this before but my drive was only 500GB and it looked like it did a backup but nothing was put onto the drive and my suspicion is that the drive wasn't large enough to accept the backup.
If that doesn't work, i will purchase a USB chassis for the drive to connect directly to my laptop and using the linux-reader suggested above, try to extract the data from there.
Does that sound like my best options?
<so frustrated> After I get access to this data and my crisis is over....i will come back to get advice on how to prevent this from happening moving forward. - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserUnless you configured the backup button to backup the entire NAS, you cannot back it up with a dead NIC.
Let's try one more time. Your immediate option is to
(a) connect disk 1 of the duo to your PC. You can to this via SATA, or (perhaps more practical) by purchasing a USB adapter with power supply.
Windows will not recognize the drive (and of course if you format it under windows you are doomed). So step (b) is
(b) Install linux Reader on the PC. It should recognize your data
(c) is to first copy the tax data you need, and second to back everything else up.
If your data is all intact, this will work. And it is certainly your fastest option to get your data back. - vandermerweMasterjjmanning, you said in your first post that you had tried everything.
Did you put the NAS into tech support mode to see if your network sees it?
I assume as part of your testing you did a OS reinstall as well.
