difference between RN31442D & 31442E

Hi Sorry if this has been discussed before! Im new to NAS looking at the RN314 but wondering if there is an advantage to purchasing the one prepackaged with drives or just buying the unit and adding my own Seagate Enterprise NAS drives? Cant find much info on the advantages of buying the prepackaged ones just wondering if there is anything pre configured setup with the prepackaged drives that are time saving I.e. are they already setup as RAID 5 or 10 etc cheers, Rachel

The model ending in E has enterprise disks. The model ending in D has desktop disks.

If you want to add your own disks make sure they are on the compatibility list: http://kb.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/20641

The default RAID configuration is X-RAID2 which uses RAID-5.

    I have the D7000 too. It's a great new ADSL2/VDSL modem/router.

  • I recently replaced our prepackaged telstra modem and apple timecapsule with a D7000 nighthawk so figured the NAS can be the new remote storage/access solution for multiple small home office computers/laptops and new timecapsule backup drive

Thanks for the speedy reply! sorry im completely new to NAS but sounds like what I am looking for - Im a mac user but the netgear I have has been working just fine with it! Ive been pretty happy with my kit so far with the D7000 and a WN3500 repeater! so with an imac/macbook air/macbook pro and a few ipads/iphones/ipods apple tv's etc would the 314 desktop version work well its mainly a better replacement for my time capsule so time capsule backups would be great but especially want to setup remote access to files and just have a central location to access all working files rather than in a few different places at the moment I've got files on the macbook pro/imac and on external drives/dropbox so its all a bit messy was looking to run a NAS to handle uniformity and main feature is to be able to access offsite (like back to my mac does) Im only a small home office sole trader I was told for file backups RAID 10 is good?
