difference between RN31442D & 31442E
Hi Sorry if this has been discussed before! Im new to NAS looking at the RN314 but wondering if there is an advantage to purchasing the one prepackaged with drives or just buying the unit and adding ...
The model ending in E has enterprise disks. The model ending in D has desktop disks.

Thanks for the speedy reply! sorry im completely new to NAS but sounds like what I am looking for - Im a mac user but the netgear I have has been working just fine with it! Ive been pretty happy with my kit so far with the D7000 and a WN3500 repeater! so with an imac/macbook air/macbook pro and a few ipads/iphones/ipods apple tv's etc would the 314 desktop version work well its mainly a better replacement for my time capsule so time capsule backups would be great but especially want to setup remote access to files and just have a central location to access all working files rather than in a few different places at the moment I've got files on the macbook pro/imac and on external drives/dropbox so its all a bit messy was looking to run a NAS to handle uniformity and main feature is to be able to access offsite (like back to my mac does) Im only a small home office sole trader I was told for file backups RAID 10 is good?
Yes the 314 would be a good choice for that.
You can use RAID-10. Note that RAID-10 provides redundancy and protects against one disk failure and in some cases two disk failures (it depends which disks fail). This is a good first line of defence, but there are problems that RAID cannot protect you against.
Note that if you are using the NAS for primary storage you should still backup the NAS e.g. to USB disks or another NAS and preferably have at least one backup off-site.
For your Time Machine backups the NAS would be a backup as the primary copy of the data is on your Mac, but if you need protection against fire, flood, theft etc. an off-site backup would still be important.You can give each user their own personal Time Machine on ReadyNAS OS 6.2.0 and later.

so the 31442D come already packaged with RAID 5 setup Im trying to figure out I can buy the 314 diskless and add 2tb Western Digital Red drives to it but just trying to figure out if this would be the same as the prepackaged 31442d version it doesnt state what brand drives the 2tb ones are anywhere on the netgear specs also would I have to go through setting up the RAID 10 either way would it be any quicker (just looking to see if there is any advantages to either)
I can get them both around the same price the 31442d or a 314 with WD red 2tb HDDs x 4thanks again for all the advice!

We can't guarantee which model drive would be in a populated unit. It will be a drive that we have tested and verified is compatible.
So if you'd rather buy a diskless unit you can.
I'm not sure if any of the syncing would have already taken place on a populated unit or not, but yes either way you go if you want RAID-10 you will need to disable X-RAID, delete the default volume and create a new one.During the initial RAID sync the volume is redundant the whole time and you can use the NAS albeit with reduced performance till the sync completes.
I would recommend when you get the unit that you update it to the latest firmware, verify update is successful, do a factory default (wipes all data, settings, everything) and then disable X-RAID, destroy the default volume and create the one you want.RAID-10 is a popular RAID level. and better than RAID-5.
