Sun Nov 24 12:54:24 WET 2013 Reallocated sector count has increased in the last day. Disk 2: Previous count: 4 Current count: 402 ATA error count has increased in the last day. Disk 2: Previous count: 0 Current count: 6 Growing SMART errors indicate a disk that may fail soon. If the errors continue to increase, you should be prepared to replace the disk.

You have two failing disks, not one.

    (1) usually pending sector counts are worse than ATA errors.
    (2) If disk 2 is the disk removed from the array, it is possible that resync will fail when because of the pending sector errors on drive 1.

Make a backup of your data without delay - it is very possible that you will lose your data volume when you try to replace your disks.
  • ok if i have 3 drives containing 3tb what sort of size do i need for the back . what is the compression ratio

Frontview backup (like Windows Drag and Drop) just copies files, there is no compression.

3x3TB has a max of size of 6 TB.

BTW, I missed one line your log for disk 3:

This is a bit scary - how old are these drives? What model?
  • ok going out to buy myself a 3tb drive in morning ..finger crossed backup works..then i guess buy new drives for nas ..this is going to hurt.
  • Can some one please shine some light over my problem .. I have been aware of pending doom of my drives . first disk 2 ..then on trying to help by removing some of the data on the array this cause disk one to increase its errors. Ok so I removed disk two replaced it with a single two t/b drive this at first wasn’t noticed, so I put back th faulty disks 2 and added the new 2t/b drive into bay 5..ok this has seemed to of worked but disk two now is not even seen and the new disk seems to be a spare. But the odd thing is now I can still access the nas box but now disk 1 is dead ..there was to start with over 2t/b of data on here , and still is just under 2t/bs ..i want to replace disk 1 , but I’m not sure if it is really dead because on the raidar list it is saying lall is ok . but in the log dead…

Sat Nov 23 19:42:21 WET 2013 If the failed disk is used in a RAID level 1, 5, or X-RAID volume, please note that volume is now unprotected, and an additional disk failure may render that volume dead. If this disk is a part of a RAID 6 volume, your volume is still protected if this is your first failure. A 2nd disk failure will make your volume unprotected. It is recommended that you replace the failed disk as soon as possible to maintain optimal protection of your volume.

Do you have an up-to-date backup? If not, that should be the first priority.

Once that is done, I suggest that you check the drives with vendor tools on a PC (seatools for seagate, lifeguard for western digital).
  • sadly i never had enough space on any one drive on my pc to back up .. very odd it worked for about an hour last night .. wasnt until i rebooted the drives and this happened again.. going to try turning it back on later.. can the drives be checked on a pc i thought they would be unreadable . if they were connected up in raid on a pc would they work .

You can test the drives in a PC using the vendor tools. The file system can't be read, but the diagnostics don't care about that. The normal tests are non-destructive - there is a destructive write test in both diags, but you will be properly warned if you accidentally click on it.
