Disk Space Cleanup

I manage several ReadyNAS NV+ units at different clients offices for offsite backup... Twice now I have run into a situation where the drives fill up and either need to upgraded or, in two cases, it was determined that there was as large volume of redundant data on the system. The plan was to delete a large amount of data to clear up room.

However even after deleting large quantities of data, Front View still reports the same amount of space used. I tried running a re-sync, but this didn't change anything. How do I get the readynas to recognize that there is more room again?

  • Bump,

Is there no way to cleanup redundant files on a ReadyNAS NV+? Why is it that this machine is incapable of recognizing that files have been deleted and automatically making that space available again. This seem to me that it should be an automatic function of ANY FILE SYSTEM.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
  • Not sure if any of this information will help, but...

    Model: ReadyNAS NV+ [X-RAID]
    Serial: 000da20186f5
    Firmware: RAIDiator 4.1.13 [1.00a043]
    Memory: 256 MB [2.5-3-3-7]
    IPv4 address:: 172.21.8.2
    Volume C: Online, X-RAID, 4 disks, 97% of 1380 GB used

Also, I have checked to make sure the recycle bin is turned off on all directories, I have done a re-sync as well as rebooted the machine and run volume scans and Quota fixes....

What do you mean by cleaning up "redundant data"???

My NAS (including NV+ and duo v1) all automatically reclaim free space when files are deleted.
  • that's what I am talking about. unwanted or unneeded files that we delete. The space is not being automatically reclaimed.

In addition to this, space used by the shares is not being reported properly.

I have 8 shares on this one box, one of them shows 0 space used under FrontView. However there is over 70 GB of files in that share.

Under other shares, when you delete files manually (browsing under Windows Explorer) the shares sizes do not change and the space used for the overall raid never goes down.

    ....

That all said, I have had some success today as I went into the "Advanced Options" under each share and clicked the the check box for "Set ownership and permission for existing..." and clicked apply. Now When I delete files, they DO appear to take the size off the total volume shown on front view...

But despite this success, files previously deleted still seem to be taking room, and one share shows 0 (zero) size even though there is 70GB of files in it.

I think the easiest way to sort this out would be to enable SSH and take a look.
