Duo to Duo Backup Hangs

Are you running rsync over ssh, or normal rsync?

As far as I am aware, just regular rsync. I don't see any option for rsync over SSH, and I have not installed any 3rd party plugins to do so.
Any other thoughts?

Rsync should be using port 873. You can check to see if that port is open at both ends at http://www.canyouseeme.org/
Then create a small test share on one system, with just a couple of files. Create a new rsync backup job for just that share, and see if it works.

Hmmm...I actually have 2 backup jobs that run at 2am--the main one which i've been having issues with, and another one that's contents rarely changes (this has been running issue-free for years). i went ahead and made some changes to the contents of the 2nd job for the sake of a test--we'll see how things look by tomorrow.
also, i've verified that port 873 is open on both ends.
Will report back tomorrow.

So the 2nd backup job ran successfully; however, the 2nd job was aborted since it's previous instance was still running.
Do you have any other thoughts or troubleshooting tips?
