OK, just figured out what I was doing wrong...
I thought I was looking for *2* flashes at 30 seconds - when in fact if holding down the reset button, the disk led's will only flash *once* at 5 seconds and then only *once* again at 30 seconds - this is when to let go of the reset button for a factory reset. I was somehow interpreting the instructions for this procedure incorrectly - doh! Anyway, I hope this helps others not fall in to the same trap I did.
