Duo v1 expansion: 2x 750GB to 2x 2TB - But Volume Not Larger
I had 2x 750GB Samsung disk's in my Duo v1. One disk recently failed, so I decided to upgrade to upgrade both disks to 2x SeagateBarracuda ST2000DM001 disks (they are on the HCL for the Duo).
Fist I replaced the dead 750GB HDD, and waited for it to sync. After the sync, the volume in frontview still showed volume capacity of 618GB (I'm using RAID1) which I exped as the other 750GB was still present.
Then I replaced the other (good) 750GB HDD with the other 2TB Seagate drive and let it sync. However, after this final sync, with both 2TB disks in the Duo, the volume still shows as 618GB and not larger. I've tried rebooting and shutting down but the previous volume size remains. When I changed both disks it was always a "hot swap" with the NAS on.
Any ideas what's up? Did I miss a step or is there something in front view i can do to get the volume to the correct size now there are 2x 2TB disks in the Duo?
Thanks in advance for any help with this :)

- EtzAspirantOnly X-Raid mode has capability to expand.
And you cannot change modes "on the fly", factory reset is needed for that and it will destroy your data.
So you have to backup your data first and do factory reset afterwards then you will be able to select operating mode from RAIDar.
Also factory reset will align your new 2TB disks properly to get most performance out of them.
There is a very useful article, why sometimes "factory default" is the best way for doing HDD changes on Sparc based units.

What firmware version are you exactly running? - mgrzywaczAspirantAh, I see. Darn, didn't realise that. Would you recommend I use X-Raid on the reset? I chose RAID1 thinking it's a standard format so if my NAS died for some reason it would be easier to get the data off the disks - but maybe this is incorrect thinking?
My Duo has RAIDiator 4.1.10 running. I always update it as soon as a new release is available.
Are there simple instructions somewhere on doing a factory reset?
Now to go run a loooong backup to an ext hard drive. lol

X-Raid is also recoverable with little tinkering and with Linux PC but has other useful benefits,
Also Sparc units RAID-1 isnt easily recoverable, as they dont use standard Block size.
So both modes actually need extensive Linux knowledge, if dealing with disks which came from Sparc based ReadyNAS.mgrzywacz wrote: My Duo has RAIDiator 4.1.10 running. I always update it as soon as a new release is available.

To perform an OS Re-install or Factory Default, this is managed via the Reset button on the back of the chassis.
Locate the reset pinhole.
ReadyNAS X6/600: the pinhole is on the back in the lower left corner.
ReadyNAS Duo/NV/NV+: the pinhole is next to the USB port in the back.
Get a straightened paper clip and depress the hidden switch in the pinhole while the power is off, and then power on the ReadyNAS.
To perform other options such as Skip Volume Check, Tech Support Mode, and Memory Test, this is managed via the Power button.
With the system off, hold down the Power button, and wait for the desired LED flashes.
Release the Power button when the option you desire is active. - StephenBGuru - Experienced User
XRaid is layered on top of standard RAID, so the volume itself uses a normal RAID format. So you probably should have picked X-Raid when you set up your duo.mgrzywacz wrote: Ah, I see. However, since you are expanding to the hardware limits of the V1, it doesn't really matter whether you stick with RAID1 or switch to X-Raid. No future expansion is possible either way.
The only possible advantage of X-Raid I can think of is that it would allow you to move your disks to an NV+ v1 and expand from there. With RAID1 you could also migrate to the NV+ v1, but wouldn't be able to expand. It seems unlikely that you would actually do this, given that the v2 came out a year ago. - mgrzywaczAspirantGreat info, thanks guys. It's big help to know that.
Even though, as you stated Stephen, I'm taking the Duo v1 to it's capacity limit, and so it doesn't make much difference, I think I'll pick X-Raid on the reset.
Thanks again :) - mgrzywaczAspirantI've had a look at the factory reset options at the page: http://www.readynas.com/?page_id=5029 ...but I'm left a little confused.
What's the correct method for a Duo v1? Is this simply it:
1) Press in the switch in the pin hole on the back and release.
2) then power on but hold down power button until the led flashes twice at the 30 second mark and let go.
3) now sit and wait?
Btw, is it the blue power button that flashes or the hdd led's? Just want to check this as my finger will be cover the power blue led in the button! lol
Thanks again for helping a total newb! - StephenBGuru - Experienced UserYou have the right procedure - it is also documented in the hardware manual:
To perform an OS reinstall or factory reset:
1. Power off your system.
2. Using a straightened paper clip, press and hold the Reset button.
3. Press and release the Power button to power on the system.
4. To perform an OS reinstall, continue to hold the Reset button until all Disk LEDs flash once, after about 5 seconds, and then release the button.
To perform a factory reset, continue to hold the Reset button until all Disk LEDs flash twice (once at 5 seconds and then 25 seconds later), and then release the button.
You can also connect the drives to your PC and delete the partitions, as starting the duo with the blank drives forces it to do a factory reset. - mgrzywaczAspirantThanks for the info, although I've done this and when holding the reset button in and expecting different blinks every 5 second interval, I didn't get this. I think there were only 2 different blinks in about 45 seconds. So I had to let go of the reset button and now the Duo v1 has only disk led 2 lit and the fan is at full whack. No idea what it's doing. I saw in another area that it's the power button I need to hold down - is this right? Anyone know what my Duo is doing now? I'm scared to turn it off in the state it's in incase it's doing something I mustn't interrupt.
Thanks again. - mgrzywaczAspirantJust thought I mention it's still doing this over 40 mins later - blue power button blinking fast and disk 2 led lit and disk 1 led off. Any ideas what it's doing? Is it safe to turn off the Duo and try the factory reset again?
- mgrzywaczAspirantOk, it was about an hour and it wasn't showing any change so I tried to turn the NAS of via the power button - nothing happened - so I took a risk and just unplugged it from the mains. Then tried the procedure again, hold reset button in, push power button, and wait for the led flashes. But the same thing happend - after 5 seconds both disk leds flash once, then about 10/15 seconds later they do it again just once, and then another while later the 2nd disk led is lit and the power button is remains blinking fast and the NAS does nothing. Got no idea why I'm not getting the proper boot menu led flashes while depressing the reset switch in on power on - all a bit odd.
