Expanding Storage on RN104
Hi All, I am looking to expand the storage on my RN104. Currently I have 2x 4TB drives set up in JBOD in slot's 1 & 2. My plan is to migrate to 8TB drives. I also want to set-up my RAID so it has...

Hi all, thanks again for the info. A fair chunk of my data is media for my media centre runing Kodi. The important stuff is backed up onto a 2TB drive and stored. So that I am not too worried about.
I have a USB3 dock already, I used it to migrate from my old tower PC with 10 SATA drives with various sizes. It was a beast of a machine lol.
I purchased the two new 4TB's today. I'll migrate to those via USB. Restore my NAS, start fresh & should be ready to have my new 12TB array soon.
If I have any questions, I'll come back :)
Thanks again!

Hi StephenB, So I have it all set up now. 2x4TB installed. X-RAID running. It's "resyncing" & from what I can tell, this is to get the two drives alligned in sectors or something?
Can I start moving stuff back whilst this operation is running? Or am I best to wait until it is completed?
Also, just to revisit the upgrading down the line. If I want to expand, is it just as simple as swapping out drives?
Thank you again for your help & support on this :)

Hi xander85,

- You can move or copy files but expect a slower performance.
Also, just to revisit the upgrading down the line. If I want to expand, is it just as simple as swapping out drives?
- Yes. Just make sure that resync completes before inserting/replacing another drive.
Kind regards,

I have now emptied 1x4TB drive back onto my NAS & added the empty drive to the array. It is now resyncing again. This time the display shows "reshape data:" and is taking it's sweet ass time. I am guessing this is normal? As now it is spanning accross the 3 drives to create 8TB? It's been running for over 12hrs so far & the countdown has 45+ hrs remaining. It's also changed to RAID5 after adding the 3rd drive.
Hoping all of this is normal & I just need to wait for it to finish? Aftwards giving me another 4TB of space?
I'll also add that I have 130GB of free space. If that is not enough, I can move some onto a spare 1TB I have.
Thanks again!

It is normal to change to RAID-5, and the reshape does need to either read or write 12 TB of disk space. I'd expect a time around 32 hours based on other posts here - the estmated times are often incorrect. But it does depend on what else the NAS is doing.
Netgear recommends maintaining 20% free space - of course was not possible at this step in your migration. At this point I'd leave it alone, and wait for the volume to expand.
