expansion 1x3TB, 2x1TB to 2x3TB..? how to?

Hello all,
maybe the question is allready answered here, but I havent found it... :?

My current config is: 1x3TB, 2x1TB, results to redundant 2TB
Now one of the older 1TB disks shows upcoming disk failures, so I want to replace it and upgrade to
2x3TB, results redundant 3TB.

My question: how to achieve this by adding and removing the disks in what sequence..? Is it possible at all to expand with less, but bigger disks?

Thanks for your support!

So you have 1x3TB+2x1TB now, and you want to go to 2x3TB next?

Doing that requires a factory reset with 2x3TB drives in place. That's because xraid expands, but won't shrink (can't shrink the volume size, and can't reduce the number of disks). The reset destroys all data - you need to reinstall addons, restore the configuration, and reload the data from backups.

What you can do is migrate to 2x3TB+1TB - giving you redundant 4TB. That is simple, just remove the failing 1 TB drive, and insert the 3 TB drive into the same slot with the NAS running. It'll take some hours to expand (~12), and might prompt you for a reboot.

Though this is usually safe, your data is at risk during the expansion (because there is no redundancy until the expansion completes). So you should update your backup before you begin.
  • Thank you very much for your help.
I'll take the option two with the 1TB disk remaining. I wasn't aware, that this will also give one additional GB volume.

    Regards.
