Personally I think starting with 2x4 TB drives is a better approach if you can afford it. NAS-purposed drives are a better choice then consumer desktop drives, and almost the same price. Their warranties are also longer. The WD40EFRX is one option, the ST4000VN000 is another. I like the WDC red drives myself, I have 8 installed in various NAS, and they have worked out very well.
